"Wizard rock" is a music genre inspired by the world of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. The music is generally indie-inspired with a DIY ethic and a humorous, whimsical spin. Los Angeles is the home of wizard rock, which is said to have begun in 2000 with local band Switchblade Kittens' "Ode to Harry." Whimsic Alley, Southern California's source for all things Potter, is holding a wizard rock festival at the El Rey, featuring Alex Carpenter (formerly of the Remus Lupins), Wingardium Leviosa and more to be announced. MMW was great. The El Rey was completely packed. They rocked the house. This event was listed as standing room only, but there're seats along the walls, and some tables and seating area on the second floor. If you get there early you could easily grab a seat, but everybody was on there feet when the show started. We went a bit early and stood about 15 ft from the band. Great show and the venue has pretty good acoustics.Written on Feb 21 2010

The El Rey is a gorgeous gothic like concert venue. There's seating along the back walls, but if you want to get up and close and jam (it's standing room only). Jamie Lidell was brilliant and cool to watch up close.Written on Aug 31 2010

I saw Negrita and Roy Paci and Aretuska here. The bands rocked the house. Roy Paci's 9 piece ensemble included horns and sounded just joyful. Negrita was more of a hard rock sound and they blew me away. I have never rocked out so hard to bands I have never heard of before. The venue was great, parking was $10 in the lot since we got there a little late. I loved everying, especially these hot Italians bands! I thought that the drinks were too expensive - $9 for a well drink? Oh well, this is LA and it was all worth it.Written on Oct 18 2010

An on-point and surprisingly hard-rocking show from Blitzen Trapper. Their drummer in particular was impressive. The El Rey is a great place to watch live music -- excellent acoustics, good sight lines, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing. (So many chandeliers, though!) Four stars!Written on Jul 19 2010

Description
November 6, 2011: "This is the Moment" tour - Paul Byrom (formerly of Celtic Thunder)
Paul Byrom is often hailed as Ireland's premier young tenor and with good reason. From an early age his special vocal talent brought him the attention of music coaches and talent spotters. He was a professional singer by his early teens and Paul recorded his first album as a boy soprano at 14. His talent as a tenor has taken him far and wide, and some of the many highlights of his career to date include performing for many dignitaries such as Irish President Mary McAleese, Emperor Akihito of Japan, Former Irish President and UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson and most recently for the President Barack Obama.
In 2007 Paul was invited to join Celtic Thunder as one of the five soloists. "I was thrilled to join Celtic Thunder and get the chance to work with Phil Coulter again" says Paul. "We have had a lot of fun making the show's and it's very exciting to think about bringing it to new audiences around the world." Fans call Byrom "The Swanky Tenor" for his suave and romantic style in performing, which is stamped on such numbers in Celtic Thunder as "Remember Me Recuerde Me" and "She". Coming from a classical background, Paul is not used to his new hordes of screaming fans. "They want to know every detail" exclaims Paul, "and not just about my music down to what boxers I'm wearing!!!!" However he seems to be adjusting well and hopes he has some fans for life!
