Finnish conductor-composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, who gained fame at the baton of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, returns to California for an exciting trio of performances as the principal conductor and artistic advisor of the acclaimed Philharmonia Orchestra of London. This multi-show residency is highlighted by a concert version of Alban Berg's Austrian avant-garde opera Wozzeck, featuring both the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus and members of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. But the series kicks off with an evening spotlighting one of Salonen's own compositions, Helix, along with an exploration of works by Beethoven (Symphony No. 7) and Berlioz (Symphonie Fantastique). For the grand finale, the Philharmonia brings its 2009 recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 9 to life on stage. Plus, there's a pre-performance discussion before each show.

SF Symphony: Barantschik and Vinocour Play Britten's Double Concerto

Full Price:
$34.00 - $92.00
Our Price:
$10.00

The San Francisco Symphony, under the baton of conductor Kirill Karabits, spotlights violinist Alexander Barantschik and violist Jonathan Vinocour for a performance of Benjamin Britten's Double Concerto. Written as a tribute for Britten's composition teacher when the composer was just 18, the Double Concerto is a challenging piece that requires immense technical skill on both the violin and viola. Its youthful vigor is sure to challenge the virtuosity of the Symphony's Concertmaster and Principal Violist. The program also features Honegger's Pacific 231 and Sibelius' Symphony No. 2. An excellent program: the Salonen piece was carefully built and played very well'the Beethoven had real fire and mastery'; the Berlioz was dramatic and coherent.

"The Philharmonia is on a high with Esa-Pekka Salonen," wrote The Observer of London's Philharmonia Orchestra and indeed, this revered ensemble has entered the new millennium during the most exciting phase in its history. Led by one of today's visionary conductors, Esa-Pekka Salonen, the orchestra is a musical pioneer, leading the field with its extraordinary quality of playing. The Philharmonia is also celebrated for its use of new technology to reach and inspire a global audience.

The orchestra has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with many of the past century's greatest conductors, including Wilhelm Furtwängler, Richard Strauss, Arturo Toscanini, and Herbert von Karajan. Otto Klemperer was the first of many outstanding principal conductors, a storied list that includes Riccardo Muti, Giuseppe Sinopoli, and Christoph von Dohnányi.

Current Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen made his London conducting debut in 1983 at age 25 with the Philharmonia, stepping in at the last minute to lead a now-legendary performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 3. Today, he has forged an incredible, dynamic relationship with the ensemble, both as a conductor and composer, rediscovering and reinvigorating the music of the past as well as creating and championing the music of our time.

Join these formidable artists as they perform cornerstones of the symphonic repertoire, and arguably, the greatest opera of the 20th century, Alban Berg's Wozzeck.
