Jonathan Moscone, Artistic Director of the California Shakespeare Theater and Tony Taccone, Artistic Director of The Berkeley Repertory Theatre are two of the driving forces behind the thriving Bay Area theater scene. Commonwealth Club welcomes them to the Lafayette Library for a discussion about their life and work. These two artistic leaders have helped invigorate the arts in the Bay Area and particularly the East Bay and each will explore their experiences leading two innovative theater groups. Moscone, son of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and a Yale-trained director, took charge of the California Shakespeare Theater in 2000 and turned around the once struggling troupe. During Taccone's tenure at the Berkeley Rep, the Tony Award-winning nonprofit theater has earned a reputation as an international leader in innovative theater and as an incubator of new plays.

terrific to hear from these two very talented theatre leaders. Tony was a bit hard to understand, as his voice was not projected well to the audience when he turned toward the moderator. And the space in the Lafayette Library while nice, is not ideal. Because the dias is not raised very much, it is quite difficult to see the speakers if anyone tall is sitting near the front. And there was a giant guy up front! But the insights both men shared were fascinating; all in all a terrific evening.

Thank you for the opportunity to listen to a Commonwealth Club of CA. in person on this side of the tunnel. I am a subscriber to both theaters; but, had not heard the two men speak together.

I attended the event because of the topic: a discussion of the arts in the East Bay. There was very little focused discussion of arts in the East Bay. Rather, the discussion roamed from this to that--tending to be more a "schmooz" session.
