Brother Russia: World Premiere of Signature's Latest Rock Musical

Full Price:
$63.00 - $82.00
Our Price:
$32.00 - $40.50

The latest creation by the award-winning team of composer Dana P. Rowe and writer-lyricist John Dempsey (The Fix, The Witches of Eastwick), this exciting new musical -- set in present-day Russia -- follows the adventures of a comically downtrodden theater troupe, whose specialty is rock adaptations of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. But for tonight's show, taking place in a tent on a potato field north of Omsk, they've decided to reveal that their impresario and star, Brother Russia, is actually Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin, the hypnotic -- and apparently immortal -- "Mad Monk" whose controversial influence over the Romanov royal family is said to have led to their 1917 downfall. I was totally blown away by Signature Theatre's production and unique staging of this play. I had seen Les Miz a few years ago for the first time and "just didn't get the hoopla" and why it had people crying. THIS production was so intimate that I got caught up in the music and acting. I was crying in my seat! The only "glitch" was an audience member becoming ill and one of the actor's noting it and stopped the show for medical help. The production resumed with a round of applause from the audience for the professionalism. I would definitely go again.

A few of the actors did not have strong voices. Disappointed with the actor who played Javert especially. That should be one of the strongest roles. The set design and staging was excellent.

After seeing the show on a Broadway type stage several times this performance seemed a little odd. The music and power of the story seemed lost on the small blackbox stage. There are seats around 3 of the 4 sides of the stage and my seats were so far on one side I missed some of the action.
