I attended this performance with my mother on Palm Sunday. The actors were fabulous, what voices! It was wonderful to hear E. Faye Butler again, she was so good in Dinah Was. This was a really nice venue for this production and the staging was fresh. Zurin danced and sang her way into our hearts, we couldn't believe this was her debut.
The middle dragged a bit and my mom and I agreed that there sould have been even more singing! There's room for a few more old standards.
We loved it-take your mom, sister, girlfriends, even husbands!

Quotes & Highlights

Description

Hold onto your hat—one of Arena Stage's most popular musicals returns with a new production of Crowns. Big, wide-brimmed hats. Pill box hats. Fussy hats. Hats with fox fur and satin trim and emerald-green feathers; hats covered in fruit, birds and ringing bells. Hats that flirt, hats that scold, hats that praise, hats that grieve. Hats that bring power. Hats that sing. These are the crowns worn by the “hat queens” of the South—women whose storied lives are woven into the straw, silk, wool and lace that adorn their heads.

With soulful, spiritual and joyful music, they celebrate family and faith, love and loss, seeking (and finding) one’s true identity. Based on the acclaimed book by photographer Michael Cunningham and journalist Craig Marberry, Crowns captures the thrill of self-expression with an intimate look at six women’s lives. Winner of four Helen Hayes Awards, including Best Resident Musical, Crowns is a series of musical portraits that delighted Washington audiences. See it again—or for the first time—but be prepared for the “hattitudes” that will make you laugh and the music that will let your spirit soar.

About the Ticket Supplier: Arena Stage

Arena Stage today stands as a flagship American theater. Arena Stage was one of the first not-for-profit theaters in the United States, as well as a pioneer of the regional theater movement. It was the first regional theater to transfer a production to Broadway, the first invited by the U.S. State Department to tour behind the Iron Curtain, and the first to receive a Tony Award. Taking a leadership role in extending theater's horizons, Arena Stage has implemented groundbreaking policies and programs, promoting diversity in all aspects of theater, from theatergoing to production.

The Arena Stage legacy of world-class productions includes vast epics, charged dramas, rousing musicals, and probing profiles. From the monumental to the developmental, Arena Stage has helped build the canon of American theater. While they produce American classics, Arena Stage premieres new American plays and supported works in progress. They've nurtured artistic growth and engaged the community, broadening and intensifying the theatrical experience for one and all. And yet, in spite of it all, in their second half-century they see themselves as more fresh, restless and dynamic than ever.
