Written on May 12 2009A memorable evening; perhaps not entirely so, but the highlights were remarkably high. Jake Heggie's art songs showed breadth; from touching to hilarious. There were a number of vocalists, including the delightful Nicholas Phan and the theatrically savvy Catherine Cook; but the high point were a series of duets featuring Kristin Clayton and the legendary Frederica von Stade. Perfect as a post-Mother's Day set, the four songs were set to lyrics by Charlene Baldridge, Armistead Maupin, Eugenia Zukerman and Jake Heggie himself. The voices blended beautifully, their performances were insightful and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny.
Written on May 12 2009Absolutely an outstanding event with a raft of highly talented and accomplished singers and musicians. Thanks to the presenters for organizing such a very special offering. Anyone interested in spending an enjoyable evening out should sign up for the next series.
Written on May 12 2009Jake Heggie served as a congenial host introducing his friends as well as accompanying almost all of the singers. All great voices and interpretations..
Music at Meyer is extremely well organized. It is a friendly and acoustically pleasing venue with coffee and tea at intermission and a reception following the concert.
I will certainly try to attend Music at Meyer next season.
Written on May 12 2009Fantastic evening of incredible music! Jake continues to amaze w/ his inspired and often haunting melodies and the outstanding soloists really did his work justice. The instrumentalists accompanying the soloists did an excellent job as well.
