The first play written by an African American ever to be produced on Broadway, Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun "changed American theater forever," according to The New York Times. Moxie Theatre gives the show its full due with a powerhouse cast, including Mark Christopher Lawrence who plays Big Mike on NBC's Chuck, and members of the award-winning ensembles from Cygnet Theatre's productions of Fences and The Piano Lesson. Well known to film viewers from the 1961 movie starring Sidney Poitier, A Raisin in the Sun is the story of the Youngers, an African-American family living on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. Faced with a $10,000 inheritance, the family -- accustomed to struggling to make ends meet -- tries to decide the best way to spend the money. As they consider a new home, investment in a business, college tuition and more, they face the challenges of unexpected pregnancy, a marriage proposal, and a heartbreaking theft. Through it all, they never give up hope of the American dream. Learn More

Country western or gospel music fans might be put off by this one....I Loved it! This production ROCKS! I had not seen the play nor the film before, and I was captivated by the characters and the plot. The singing was totally believeable; I would have guessed that the actor playing Hedwig had originated the role. Of course I have no benchmark, but I will be interested to rent the DVD now. Technically the sets and lighting and special sound and fog effects were spot-on. I really enjoyed it, and I'm not just saying that because I love just about everything Cygnet offers!Written on Jun 04 2009

I don't think I would have invited Grandma to this event, but we sure enjoyed it! Hedwig is a real crack-up, but a crack-up with some depth and desperation as well. If you like Rocky Horror, you'll love this next time it comes into town.Written on Sep 03 2009

What a downer of a story ... but what an uplifting experience! I loved Hedwig! She was very funny, and the many facets of her personality, well, sparkling! I found Hedwig so terrifying and unpredictable, one did not DARE to look away. She is a Girlfriend for the ages. Survive, surpass, and rise above, indeed. Great acting job! Great band! Great special effects, great set design. An outstanding Cygnet production, all around. As always. Thank you! I loved Hedwig! Oh, I said that.Written on Jun 04 2009
