For the first time in a decade, Miguel Pinero's award-winning play Short Eyes will be produced in Los Angeles. Julian Acosta directs the production by the Urban Theatre Movement and the Latino Theater Company. Written while the playwright was serving his sentence at Sing Sing prison for armed robbery, Short Eyes charts the racial, sexual and personal politics of a group of inmates at an unnamed house of detention in New York City. The population of the institution is an assembly of racially and ethnically divided cliques in an internally constructed society with its own rules and boundaries, peopled with violent felons, thieves and killers. Into their society comes a new prisoner, a middle-class white man named Clark, accused of child rape and nicknamed "short eyes," the term used by prisoners to brand child molesters. The play debuted at the Riverside Church, moved Off-Broadway in 1974 to The Public Theatre in New York City and to Broadway at the Vivian Beaumont Theater to critical acclaim including six Tony Award nominations, the New York Critics Circle Award and an Obie Award for the Best Play of the Year. I really enjoyed they play. The idea of music to allow us to listen to the different conversations taking place worked great. The acting was top notch, specially enjoyed "the man" and "Johnny." Sal as Johnny singing in the second scene was magnificent. The play may also remind you to pick up your phone or visit your mother if you haven't lately.Written on Sep 28 2009

The latest re-boot of Los Angeles Theatre Center is off to a good start. The Latino Theater Company's production of "Solitude" is a play with music telling the story of family and friends reaction to the death of one of the character's mother. Sleek, smart and innovative, this show is a crowd pleaser with effective costumes and neat set design. Robert Beltran ("Eating Raoul" and "Big Love") is a standout. Go see this and take part in the rebirth a great theater.Written on Sep 07 2009

Inspired by Mexican Nobel prize recipient Octavio Paz’s literary work Labyrinth of Solitude, Solitude explores love, death, destiny, family in contemporary lens. On the day of the million immigrant march, Gabriel invites his old neighborhood friends over after his mother’s funeral. As the wine pours and mambo explodes, they share secrets, cry together, laugh together, sing rancheras, dance and confess.
