Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, August Wilson's acclaimed drama Fences chronicles the black experience in the 1950s with humor and heart. The play tells the story of a middle-aged Troy, once a baseball star in the Negro League, now a garbage collector with diminished dreams, just fighting for a promotion. As he struggles to hold on to his dignity and his family, Troy puts up fences between himself and those he most wants to protect -- his son, his wife, his friend -- who all see the world through different, more optimistic, eyes. Great play. The cast did a wonderful job ... I especially thought the actor who played the young cowboy was excellent. Everyone at the Altarena always does such a great job of creating an intimate and believable atmosphere. Thanks for another great show.

Again this is one of my favorite small theaters. I love this space and I always enjoy their shows. Bus stop was good and enjoyable. More serious than I had anticipated. The cast was talented. Some spots seemed a bit slow yet that is how it was written or directed. Also, at times, I felt like a few of the actors were reading their lines versus really acting them. They did not do it throughout the play, just in certain sections every now and then. Excellent set and costumes as always. A nice evening out at truly one of the best theaters in the bay.

normally little theater can feel like a step up from a High School play, but this group did an excellent job. The set, costumes, acting were all quite good.

What a great show! We were so impressed by the cast and the production value, given the small venue. This is a must see if you're into local theater.
