Kathleen Turner in Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins
- Full Price:
- $67.00 - $87.00
- Our Price:
- $34.50 - $44.50
The Geffen Playhouse presents the story of Molly Ivins, the outspoken sharp-witted Texas reporter whose liberal journalism brought her national fame and a job at The New York Times, where she wrote Elvis Presley's obituary. Two-time Tony and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner plays the fiery redhead, a self-proclaimed "pain in the ass to whatever powers come to be." Though The New York Times had hired Ivins to bring life to its staid writing style, her political edginess and controversial social commentary eventually proved to be too much, and Ivins moved on to Texas papers that embraced her sharp-tongued humor. This acclaimed show captures Ivins' unique character using personal anecdotes and her colorful take on national politics. Learn More

Goldstar Member Reviews
The cast is enthusiastic and clearly committed. Choreography and staging were OK. Acoustics were not good and singers exacerbated that problem by not enunciating and staying crisp. Only one of the leads had a consistently good voice. If the gushy Goldstar reviews are to be believed, then perhaps I hit a bad show (Sun, 9/27 2PM). Also, I was surprised to conclude that the show Hair is kind of annoying in and of itself. No story arc to speak of and less than half the songs are great. Grateful to have only paid half price but not worth the time investment.Written on Sep 28 2009

An attractive, energetic cast couldn't save this production. With the exception of the singer in the role of Sheila, ALL of the vocals were inaudible. We moved at intermission (from up-close to about 1/2 way back in the auditorium), hoping the acoustics were better there. But no. It's a terrible venue for musicals. I don't understand why that one singer was able to be heard, though, maybe she has a really powerful voice (it was quite good), or maybe she has the only working microphone.Written on Sep 28 2009
