For its season finale concert, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra welcomes guest pianist Garrick Ohlsson to play Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3. Widely respected -- and even feared -- by concert pianists, the piece is considered one of the most technically difficult concertos ever written. The ASO also performs Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 to commemorate two notable anniversaries: 2010 marked 150 years since the Austrian composer's birth, and 2011 marks 100 years since his death.

Garrick's performance was masterful. It was my 1st time experiencing the Alexandria Symphoney Orchestra and it was a memorable performance.
I don't recommend the 1st 4 rows in the orchestra seating at this hall, they actually sit below the stage and are very uncomfortable unless you like looking at the underside of a piano. We were fortunate to have found other unspoken for seats a few rows back.

Ohlsson's performance was note-perfect, but he played it safe and did not take risks, especially in the third movement. Great tone, but it lacked fire. At times the orchestra was not with him, but overall was a good performance.

Mahler's symphony was done excellently.
