This was a memorable concert by the Choral Arts chorus and orchestra. Conductor/artistic director Norman Scribner, along with commenter Deborah Lamberton from NPR, led the audience on a choral music journey from Middle Ages through the current time, by first describing each selection in lay terms, then identifying the time period, a bit about the composer, what to listen for as unique to the piece or time period, and why Scribner chose to highlight that piece. Those narratives were just enough to pique your interest; an information-filled written program gave further details about each selection, along with a translation for each piece. The melding of instrumentals and voice was not only beautiful, but inspirational and at times even transcendent. Yes, those are pretty big words to describe a concert, but each of the 4 in my party agree that this concert was very special. None of us knew much about choral music, but each of us found a piece or two that really spoke to us (Tavener's The Lamb and the selection from Orff's Camina Burana were among mine), and we are all looking forward to the next concert in the series.Written on Nov 17 2010
