Port City Playhouse celebrates the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance with a performance of Pearl Cleage's Blues for an Alabama Sky. Set in 1930s Harlem, Blues for an Alabama Sky captures the spirit of a unique period in history, when the creative high of the Harlem Renaissance gave way to the devastating low of the Great Depression. Rich in history, culture, music and dreams, the play centers on a group of four friends facing turning points in their lives. Beautiful blues singer Angel lost her job at the famed Cotton Club, along with her best friend Guy, a costumer who dreams of designing dresses for Josephine Baker, star of Paris' Folies Bergère. Their neighbor Delia is trying to open a family planning clinic, while their friend Sam, a doctor, works at Harlem Hospital and delivers bootleggers' babies on the side. As each character pursues his or her dream, a new character arrives and sends their lives down a different path. Learn More

Very good production with high quality actors. The production was in the round (square) and equal time was given for each side, including the bows, which was a very nice consideration. The actors were placed throughout the audience and when it was their turn to enter the stage, they simply went into the arena and did their part Very interesting format. The play was very creative and original and we enjoyed seeing this version. thanks for such great community talent.
The show is recommended for children age 14 and older.
