Giuseppe Verdi wrote his Requiem as a memorial to the Italian writer and humanist Alessandro Manzoni. The soaring and dramatic music is filled with grief and loss, but also hope. It has been a mainstay of choral societies since the 1930s and is considered some of the loudest unamplified music ever written.
