It feels like having your own intimate museum. Well-written, politically truthful histories accompanying the relatively few, exceptional gold objects, were even more interesting than most of the pieces themselves. Museum lay-out was clear. The small museum gift shop could use a few more creative, affordable items for economically-challenged enthusiastic museum goers and families. (Postcards, their usual art purchase, are too expensive.)....Muzeo definitely needs better signage, as it was not easy to find exactly where it was in relationship to parking. Signs pointing the way to it were confusing....Trying to resuscitate non-Disney Anaheim, the city created a friendly, well-designed, peaceful, area in it's historic center, but there are few visitors and the shops are probably going bankrupt. (Several were somewhat in business, but without customers, they were closed during regular "open" hours.) The arty condos are realistically over-priced for this era, and are most likely vacant....Muzeo and Downtown Anaheim should be supported by locals and visitors, but they both need much better publicity and creative low-cost advertising to announce and celebrate their existence. Anaheim should work together with Santa Ana's Arts District, Old Orange, Downtown Fullerton, and the other remnants of beautiful historic Orange County, to reach out to those who enjoy such disappearing architectural and atmospheric rare spaces for leisurely walking humans.

Another fascinating exhibit brought to Orange County by the fine folks at Muzeo. Informative descriptions accompanied each item, which varied from very small items to some rather large gold shields and pottery artwork.

The museum is small and intimate, which makes for a nice couple hours looking at artifacts that most of us will never be able to see again.

Excellent exhibit - it is well worth the time to see it & as a bonus, they also offer a photo exhibit in the next building. The "Gold" is very informative & includes the history of California's gold rush as well.

Description

This exhibit presents more than 120 exquisitely crafted pieces of Precolumbian goldwork from Penn Museum’s 1940 excavations at the ancient cemetery site of Sitio Conte in what is now central Panama, about 100 miles west of Panama City. The gold objects, created by goldsmiths and artisans 700 to 1100 years after the birth of Christ, will be shown in "River of Gold."

Highlights:

  • The exhibition includes large embossed plaques, cast pendants and nose ornaments, gold-sheathed ear rods, and
necklaces of intricate beads—as well as polychrome ceramics, and objects made of precious and semi-precious stones, whale-tooth ivory, and bone.
  • In the first section of the exhibit, visitors are introduced to the geographical setting of central Panama and the excavations
at Sitio Conte. The exciting story of the dramatic find of a
multi-grave burial containing a wealth of gold is told through site photographs, maps, drawings, even a video from the original color film of the archaeological team.
  • The second section reconstructs lifestyles of Precolumbian
    society in ancient Panama.
  • The third section analyzes the tantalizing iconography found on Sitio Conte goldwork and ceramics to help viewers interpret aspects of a long-lost ideology.
  • The sophisticated metallurgical processes by which the goldsmiths of Sitio Conte achieved extraordinary results are thoughtfully explained in the final section of the exhibition.
From April 18 to May 1, you can pan for gold, which is free with paid admission.
