A Fox on the Fairway is a madcap comedy about love, life and man's eternal love affair with golf from Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor, Crazy for You). Inspired by the English farces of the '30s and '40s, the fast-paced show is filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors and romantic hijinks, letting loose mayhem at a stuffy country club in the style of the Marx Brothers.

The show was good fun, over the top, as a farce would be but the time flew by quickly. Although the stated time was 2 h 35 min (with a 15 min intermission), the whole performance was done in a little bit over 2 hours. Out seats were good - almost in the middle of row G. Overall, with a goldstar discount, the price was right.

I went because of Holly Twyford, and she's wonderful, as usual. But I did not expect the rest of the production to be so engaging and interesting and so well put together. It's am amazing round of "acts" and events and "coincidences," -- reminds me of the best of "Noises Off."

First act was slow and unfunny. Second act was much better.

We had good seats and this show was a lot of fun. Especially enjoyed the "encore." :-)

Quotes & Highlights

  • "Ken Ludwig is one of those rare contemporary playwrights who thinks in terms of old-fashioned knockabout farce, and that's something to be cherished." --The New York Times

Description

Written by Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor, Crazy for You)
Directed by Tony Award®-winner John Rando (Urinetown)
Starring Holly Twyford (Signature's Little Dog Laughed)
Featuring Jeff McCarthy, Holly Twyford and Andrew Long

A tribute from Ken Ludwig to the great English farces of the 1930s and 1940s, A Fox On the Fairway takes Signature audiences on a hilarious romp which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club. Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans, it's a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers' classics.
