Coming off his critically-acclaimed Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Follies, director Eric Schaeffer returns to his home as the artistic director at the Signature Theatre to helm this eagerly-anticipated revival of the composer's Company. It's a 35th birthday celebration for still-single Robert, attended by his married friends and his three girlfriends. Through a series of vignettes, this witty and wise musical reflects on connections and commitments, marriage and contemporary relationships. The show also boasts the hit song "Being Alive," plus "Side By Side," "Another Hundred People" and "The Ladies Who Lunch." With a score by Sondheim and book by George Furth, Company won multiple Tony Awards in both its original staging and its Broadway revivals. Known as something of a Sondheim specialist, Schaeffer has guided Signature to more than 70 Helen Hayes Awards, plus a 2009 Regional Theatre Tony. Learn More

What a perfectly delightful and charming show--given that the entire performance was supposed to be in song, I wasn't sure what to expect. But I found it to be enthralling--the actors, a husband and wife, gave incredibly nuanced and believable performances as a pair of mid-life romance seekers--and the lyrics, which were very real and compelling, were accompanied by a small group of very capable musicians. I recommend it highly! Go!

An excellent performance by the Sutherlands. From the initial meeting, the awkwardness of a new relationship, the ups and downs as that relationship builds to love and understanding are all handled with great sensitivity complemented by the musical score throughout.

Having lost my own wife recently I was drawn to the story and how art may mimic life. The music was good if forgettable (it would have been nice to have left humming at least one tune) but the story was intimate and involving and I enjoyed myself.

Description

This one-act lyrical duet explores the first year’s emotional journey between Dan and Jenna, who meet in mid-life, still trying to come to terms with their emotional pasts, while irresistibly drawn to finding a second chance at love and happiness.

Ted Shen (Book, Music & Lyrics)
After a 30-year career at the investment bank, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, where he had served as Chairman of the DLJ Capital Markets Group since 1984, Ted Shen retired in 1999 to refocus his attention on his non-profit board work in education and the arts, The Shen Family Foundation, and his own composing. Mr. Shen’s present and past nonprofit board affiliations include the Yale Corporation, the Yale University Art Gallery, Phillips Exeter Academy, The Packer Collegiate Institute, the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, and the Art Commission of the City of New York. The Shen Family Foundation, of which Mr. Shen and his wife, Mary Jo Shen, are co-executive directors, provides funding support for: the commissioning programs at Signature Theatre and the New York Public Theater for new musical theater works by composers who write with exceptional originality; major productions of works by Stephen Sondheim; and the Shen Musical Theater Curriculum at Yale University.

A Second Chance marks Mr. Shen’s debut as a musical theater writer. It was presented in concert version by the New York Public Theater at Joe’s Pub in September 2010. During his college years at Yale, he studied music theory and played in a jazz band, and from 2001 to 2003 he studied songwriting with Ricky Ian Gordon.
