Closing Time, American Premiere of a Modern Drama Set in Belfast

Title: Closing Time
Venue: Theatre on the Run (Arlington, VA)
Full Price: $20.00   Our Price: $10.00
Rating: 3.1 stars

Rated 3.1 by 14 members who went.

A run-down pub/hotel in Belfast acts as a refuge for the drinkers who stop there—including the owners. This is a day like many before it, yet different, as the people who gather realize that sometimes they must face up to the truth. Closing Time is a tender and comic portrait of love, dignity and emotional damage.

GReat but bleak play. lots of IRish adjectival f words, so if that offends you, forget it. But brilliantly acted, absolutely brilliant, and definitely worth going if you're prepared for the darker side of life...

I really wanted to like this play since I generally like Keegan Theatre's productions. However, it just didn't grab me in the first Part of the play. There was potential as far as the writing. I think some of the interesting parts of the play were delivered mundanely which left me yawning instead of sitting on the edge of my seat. I didn't stay to see the second half. It probably picked up after I left but I wasn't willing to wait for it to get better.

The venue was very small but it was great to be so close to the action. Very well acted and a moving story. I highly recommend it.

More Details About This Event:

Originally premiered at the Royal National Theatre in London in September 2002, this 90-minute play may best be described as Samuel Beckett filtered through Mamet. A poetry of the downtrodden in present-day Belfast, where what is not said is far deeper than the truth. Through this American premiere New Island continues their goal to expand with continued quality and passion the exploration of Irish works. To bring new and contemporary plays to the forefront as well as shedding new light on well known classics.

New Island, an offshoot of The Keegan Theatre, was created to produce Irish works in minimal settings allowing vivid characterizations to emerge. Through New Island, the company seeks to capture the essence of Irish theatre--raw, bold and engaging--enabling audiences to experience the immediacy of story.

By Owen McCafferty, the award-winning writer of Shoot the Crow, Mojo Mickybo and Scenes from the Big Picture
