I Am My Own Wife tells the fascinating story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who managed to survive both Nazi rule and the repressive East German Communist regime. Von Mahlsdorf was an iconic figure who created a safe-space in the bowels of her antiques museum for East Berlin 's "undesirables" - homosexuals, cross-dressers, and prostitutes. In order to survive, however, she sacrificed her ideals, becoming an informer for the East German secret police, the Stasi.

Totally one of the best shows I've ever seen and probably THE best I've seen at Signature so far. Andrew Long was captivating and did so well with each character, making each one clearly different and unique. He did such a good job of bringing you into the story that I felt like I was sitting in with the playwright and Charlotte. An extremely interesting anecdote for the turbulent time periods Charlotte lived through. My only complaint is that I can't see it again, because I saw the closing performance. After the show I even got my program signed and a hug from Mr.Long, which amazed me at how incredibly kind he was. Another wonderful Signature Theatre production :)

"I Am My Own Wife" is an exceptional play. Andrew Long, always outstanding as an actor, gives an amazing performance as he becomes the characters that tell the story of Carlotta von Mahlsdorf. We thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it highly.

Andrew Long is just fantastic, of course--especially when he switches back and forth between two characters in a conversation with only a sentence for each. A tour de force!

Description

Inspired by interviews conducted by the playwright over several years, I Am My Own Wife tells the fascinating real-life story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who managed to survive both Nazi rule and the repressive East German Communist regime.

Von Mahlsdorf was an iconic figure who created a safe-space in the bowels of her antiques museum for East Berlin 's "undesirables" – homosexuals, cross-dressers, and prostitutes. But in order to survive, she sacrificed her ideals – becoming an informer for the East German secret police, the Stasi.

In this "brilliant" (New Yorker) one-man show demanding a tour-de-force performance, the award-winning Andrew Long (My Fair Lady, Saving Aimee) portrays Charlotte 's complexity – a non-conformist shrouded in an image of conformity; a protector of minorities who ultimately becomes their betrayer. The discovery that she had survived only by informing on her friends and protégés to the East German secret police caused many – including playwright Doug Wright – to question their own definitions of survival and fidelity.
