Fantastic!
This is the first time I have seen/heard Maureen McGovern. She is now one of only a few performers who I would want to see in anything, just because it is she.

I loved it and was happy to finally see her live. The visual effects worked really well in her biographical story telling. I thought I forgot most of those songs, but was pleasantly reminded of how much I liked them then and now. Maureen was luminous and her voice was marvelous. Enjoyed the show immensely.

I was unfamiliar with any of her work since I was a kid and went based on the NYTimes review. Well the show was fantastic. Not only is her voice amazing, she is also a terrific storyteller, weaving her personal life with the major social and political events of the '60's and '70's. Her interpretations of many familiar songs from this time period will delight and move you. And she is very charming and funny, engaging the audience throughout the show. The audience was surprisingly old on opening night, but this show will please people of all ages.

A phenomenal singer, a convincing actor, and engaging story-teller, Maureen McGovern takes her audience on a musical tour of the baby-boomer age in this up-close and personal performance. The 90-minute show (no intermission) flew by and left the audience wanting more. At the first preview performance, it took only a few minutes for Ms. McGovern to relax and settle into herself. Photos and videos projected at the back of the stage provided context for the songs. And the spot-on piano accompaniments by Jeffrey D. Harris (supportive but never distracting) were just the right springboard for Ms. McGovern. She does not just sing a song, or even just act a song. She seems to LIVE each song, so much so that her physical appearance seemed to change with each number. Strung together with autobiographical narration, the songs run a gamut from rock ‘n’ roll, to folk, to pop, to classic Broadway tunes. Don’t miss this opportunity to see and hear Maureen McGovern in the (relatively) intimate setting of the Arena Stage – Crystal City.

Description

A Long and Winding Road is an entertaining and introspective look at the songs that inspired Maureen McGovern before her Academy Award-winning hit song “The Morning After.” A nostalgic tribute to Maureen’s roots as a folk singer, this show-stopping concert celebrates her love affair with the early works of Jimmy Webb, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman and other groundbreaking singer-songwriters from her youth. The repertoire includes an eclectic selection of iconoclastic singer-songwriter material including "The Circle Game," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress," "Imagine," "Fire and Rain" and many others. The songs, as The New York Times has called them, have become "the second half of the Great American Songbook." They're classic, timeless and evoke all kinds of memories.

co-conceived and written by Maureen McGovern and Philip Himberg

About the Ticket Supplier: Arena Stage

Arena Stage today stands as a flagship American theater. Arena Stage was one of the first not-for-profit theaters in the United States, as well as a pioneer of the regional theater movement. It was the first regional theater to transfer a production to Broadway, the first invited by the U.S. State Department to tour behind the Iron Curtain, and the first to receive a Tony Award. Taking a leadership role in extending theater's horizons, Arena Stage has implemented groundbreaking policies and programs, promoting diversity in all aspects of theater, from theatergoing to production.

The Arena Stage legacy of world-class productions includes vast epics, charged dramas, rousing musicals, and probing profiles. From the monumental to the developmental, Arena Stage has helped build the canon of American theater. While they produce American classics, Arena Stage premieres new American plays and supported works in progress. They've nurtured artistic growth and engaged the community, broadening and intensifying the theatrical experience for one and all. And yet, in spite of it all, in their second half-century they see themselves as more fresh, restless and dynamic than ever.
