The cast and their emotional energy were amazing. This musical touches on depression, loss, grief, survival, resilience, identity, families, relationships ... something or many things audiences can relate to. It opens the viewer up to feel and hopefully heal.Written on Jan 14 2009

Great production. Nice little venue. Seats, even though not right up front, were very good; clear view and sound. (Don't worry about not having assigned seats.. I had great seats with Goldstar.) nI really liked the play itself, the story and the music. Very solid cast. I would happily see this again.Written on Jan 12 2009

I was blown away. It was an amazing musical. My only complaintWritten on Jan 05 2009
is that they clearly had turned down the sound on the mics. I would
have preferred it to be louder and fully voiced at times. It is a rock musical and it should be treated as such. But it was the best theatre experience I have had in a long time.

Thought the cast was terrific and the tunes very catchy. Also felt they did a very good job of presenting a difficult subject in an empathetic, creative, and inspiring manner. Kudos to allWritten on Dec 22 2008
Seats were also very good in a fairly crowded performance.

Quotes & Highlights
- "A moving, blisteringly honest, and inordinately powerful new musical." --The Washington Post

- "Of real value to anyone who cares about the direction and possibilities of the American musical." --The New York Times
Description
In this new musical, two suburban parents explore how far they will go to keep themselves sane in an over-stimulated and over-medicated world. A supercharged ride from the opening number to the final seconds, Next to Normal is an emotional roller coaster that takes the audience from the highest highs to the lowest lows. With a rocking score and exhilarating performances by Broadway's hottest stars, one cannot escape the power of this bold new musical.
Directed by Michael Greif. Music by Tom Kitt. Book & lyrics by Brian Yorkey.
Director Michael Greif says, "What has always attracted me to Next to Normal was how I felt the music -- and how each character's individual musicality perfectly expressed their emotional state. The stylistic leap to a heightened form of expression -- singing -- is beautifully justified. These characters are written with real intelligence and complexity, and I truly appreciate intelligent, complex musicals."
About the Ticket Supplier: Arena Stage
Arena Stage today stands as a flagship American theater. Arena Stage was one of the first not-for-profit theaters in the United States, as well as a pioneer of the regional theater movement. It was the first regional theater to transfer a production to Broadway, the first invited by the U.S. State Department to tour behind the Iron Curtain, and the first to receive a Tony Award. Taking a leadership role in extending theater's horizons, Arena Stage has implemented groundbreaking policies and programs, promoting diversity in all aspects of theater, from theatergoing to production.
The Arena Stage legacy of world-class productions includes vast epics, charged dramas, rousing musicals, and probing profiles. From the monumental to the developmental, Arena Stage has helped build the canon of American theater. While they produce American classics, Arena Stage premieres new American plays and supported works in progress. They've nurtured artistic growth and engaged the community, broadening and intensifying the theatrical experience for one and all. And yet, in spite of it all, in their second half-century they see themselves as more fresh, restless and dynamic than ever.
