The Personal(s): World Premiere Drama From No Rules Theatre

- $31.00
- Our Price:
- $16.00
No Rules Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Personal(s), a stage adaptation of two movies -- Blind Date, an award-winning indie directed by Theo van Gogh, and a remake of the same name directed by Oscar-nominee Stanley Tucci. In the play -- as in both films -- estranged husband and wife Don and Janna go on a series of "blind dates" with each other in an effort to salvage their marriage. But their creative attempts have a deeper purpose than simply rekindling a romance: They are trying desperately to find a way to discuss the painful loss that threatens to tear them apart forever. Similar to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Personal(s) offers an intensely raw and unfiltered look at two people on the edge. Drama Desk Award-winner Josh Hecht directs Helen Hayes winner Anne Kanengeiser, Michael Kramer and Spencer Trinwith in Brian Sutow's heartbreaking and hilarious adaptation. Learn More

Written on Apr 09 2012I absolutely loved this play! My friend and I were looking for something ... a little off the standard way to spend time. This was the first play that I have been to that wasn't put on by a school or a major theater venue. This was a perfect "getting into plays" play to see.
Written on Mar 26 2012I found the play completely absorbing with a stunning conclusion. I have reflected numerous times on the characters and their actions since seeing the play. This is rare and personally affecting theater that will stay with you.
Written on Mar 25 2012What a great show! Wonderful writing from an up an coming playwright. Highly recommended and well done for a tough subject.
Written on Mar 25 2012Truly powerful with extremely good acting.
Written on Mar 23 2012Explosive play. Absolutely amazing acting. We were so short on sleep that we were afraid we'd be fighting falling asleep - but there was no chance of that happening...it grabbed hold of us and wouldn't let go. We were entranced. Also has an actor I recognized from Torchwood :).
Final week this week.
Written on Mar 20 2012Small theater, most seats are very good. Try to avoid the lower ends, you have to look across the stage at a weird angle. The play is really well done and keeps you guessing, with regards to people's motives. Who is lying, who is telling the truth? The ending will leave you surprised and scratching your head. If the subject material of rape does not offend you or make you feel uncomfortable, you will enjoy the play. I think it is overpriced, $30 per ticket is the right amount. $50-$70, no way.
Written on Mar 19 2012excellent writing and excellent acting
Written on Mar 19 2012My husband and I give this play a thumbs up. It was definately intense, and kept us totally engaged the entire time. All the characters in the play were awesome. I would highly recommend this play but know the subject matter is very sensitive.
Written on Mar 19 2012WE really really enjoyed the play. Actors were beleiveable and touched us deeply. Thank you Goldstar!
Written on Mar 19 2012Very timely and provocative - extremely well done, well acted!
Written on Mar 19 2012Very powerful play by a young writer. A DC premier.
Written on Mar 19 2012Tough to review this one. This will be a very controversial play, and while I'm glad I saw it, I didn't really "like" it. Quite a scathing portrayal of the 20 something generation. All the characters are unlikeable, and some things struck me as somewhat implausible. That said, it's well acted, and it gave us a good deal to discuss.
Written on Mar 16 2012Great seats--thank you Goldstar--at one of our favorite little theatres. The play is masterfully staged and well acted. However, it fell apart for us in the second half. We found it unbelievable that six friends could, one by one, all turn on the others. It may be our age--we are too old to connect with the so-called ME-generation?
Written on Mar 15 2012Wonderful play, although a bit disturbing. But very thought provoking, especially since I am a mother of college aged boys - the setting for this play. Superbly acted. Very timely in light of recent college campus scandals. Definitely worth seeing. Signature Stage is a great venue in an awesome little gem of an area with great restaurants and shops.
Written on Mar 15 2012My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed this play....talked about it all the way home and still thinking about it. Terrific acting from all the players. Congratulations on this production!!
Written on Mar 15 2012Spectacular writing and superb acting. We look forward to returning to such a wonderful venue.
Written on Mar 14 2012I thought this play was amazing!!! It was thought provoking and the actors worked well together.
Written on Mar 13 2012This is an astonishing and brilliant play. I think it may one day be ranked among the best American plays of the past couple decades. The acting, directing, and design are superb. But the *writing*--wow--I cannot recall being so engrossed in a text coming to life on stage. Bravo to all.
Written on Mar 13 2012This was a powerful performance, well acted, nice set and production. However I left thinking I may stick with 17th century drama. It was so dark. It could have been titled Six Despicable People. Not one Character had a moral compass. I need to have at least one character that I care about; it was not to be in this play. I think I am too old to be this pessimistic.
Written on Mar 13 2012Probably the best non-musical that Signature has done. An excellent debut for this writer. Play is not for the faint of heart, however.
Written on Mar 12 2012main story was captivating but I thought some of the ancillary characters detracted the overall experience
Written on Mar 12 2012Hard but worthwhile play about young adults that portrays life as it is today. No one is innocent.
Written on Mar 12 2012Excellent show, really made for an attentive audience. Every actor did an incredible job. You left there thinking and discussing.
Written on Mar 12 2012The play Really Really was great. The acting and staging were excellent. This was the best play we have yet seen at Signature.
Written on Mar 05 2012Whew. Was not expecting, nor was I prepared for, the ending. Can't ask much more from a play. Now that I know how it unfolds, I want to see it again to see what clues and nuances I may have missed.
Written on Feb 28 2012I can't say that I really, really enjoyed this play, but you aren't really supposed to enjoy plays about rape are you? However, it was a very intriguing piece. I am still working some of the plot implications over in my mind. The acting was superb and the cast did a great job executing. I can't say I enjoyed it or had huge "feel good" vibes at the end, but it was definitely very interesting.
Written on Feb 27 2012I liked the acting, the set, and the theatre's vibe. I want to rave about the play ... but I can't. It was too much like being forced to watch, over the shoulder of my 15-year old, any one of the television reality shows or a series such as Shameless that she shouldn't bother with yet still does. I kept thinking that I might as well have stayed home to watch a bit of Kardashian wasteland. Sure enough, a character like a Kardashian entered in the second act. The playwright is deliberately showing the foibles of the "never can have enough sex or booze" and "its all about what I want" mentality of college youth. But the topic is ubiquitous and REALLY REALLY doesn't deliver any new version of same. Unfortunately, the play's language is all "fucking" prose and no poetry or insight.
Written on Feb 25 2012Contemporary and controversial subject, very well done. Combination of laughs and gasps, excellent cast. Definitely recommend it.
Written on Feb 22 2012Great. Acting with such a difficult subject it truly is the I and the generation
Written on Feb 21 2012Clever screenplay, great character acting, complex topic!
Written on Feb 20 2012Excellent set, cast, story. Fast moving.
Written on Feb 20 2012I guess its about "Generation Me" since the characters are all in their early 20's but the story line and themes could apply to any generation. Its a smart play that builds a sense of tension which kept me interested throughout.
Written on Feb 20 2012Very thought-provoking, well-acted, interesting script. Parking was difficult.
Written on Feb 20 2012We have a son who is the age of those characters in the play. We thought it provided great insight into the "ME" generation. The writing and acting were great. Not a bad seat in the house and the individual seats were comfortable. Very intimate setting.
Written on Feb 20 2012Very good play. Well acted with none of the Signature actors I usually see in their plays.
Written on Feb 18 2012Clever writing and staging, well-acted.
Written on Feb 18 2012Depicts real life drama in college life with some disturbing events. It makes you think about the values we have, or may not have. The impact of what we do in college stays with us for the rest of our lives.
Written on Feb 17 2012Great play and performances by all. Play should now move to broadway, where it also will be a hit. Also, it has good potential for a movie in the future.
Written on Feb 13 2012A compelling and provocative play. Go see it!
