Signature Theatre -- renowned for its acclaimed stagings of Stephen Sondheim's works -- presents this special concert version of the composer's 1953 romantic comedy, Saturday Night. The first musical Sondheim ever wrote, Saturday Night was unproduced for almost 45 years. It's hard to imagine why, as this hidden gem surges with the acclaimed composer's unique musical voice and sophisticated lyrics -- both of which are highlighted in this concert presentation. Set on the eve of the 1929 stock market crash, Night centers on a group of dateless Brooklyn boys. Most of them are content to just knock around the neighborhood, but Gene dreams of Manhattan high society life -- and cooks up a get-rich-quick scheme. Night's timeless musical numbers include "So Many People," What More Do I Need?" and the title song.
