Members Who Went Said:A wonderful funny but also touching little play, very well-acted. The performers were very apt at evoking the atmosphere of the Hollywood movie team shooting their film in Kerry, in a set with only two chairs and a table for very light costume changes. It was unfortunate the opening night had such a small audience. Nevertheless, because it will be playing for a good run, I'm certain people will hear that it is a play worth seeing.
Mary Haley This play is very funny and the actors did a wonderful job. The play captures the excitement of the locals at the chance of becoming famous and the heartbreak caused by rejection. The crassness of the visiting movie makers is a little overdone. However, it is clear that making money takes precedence over all else, even a tragic death.
Jill C. Alt Acting Head It was a tour de force. Two actors played all of the parts with such wit and virtuosity slipping from one identity to another, one walk to another, one voice to another from diva to harassed production assistant, to old Irish grieved father,to prima donna director—they were flawless with each character outlined in subtlety. Not a false note—in the entire production.

More Details About This Event: The Keegan Theatre’s New Island Project presents Stones in His Pockets, a play by Marie Jones. Stones in His Pockets is set in a rural town in County Kerry, Ireland, that is overrun by a Hollywood film crew. The story centers on Charlie Conlon and Jake Quinn, who, like much of the town, are employed as extras for the filming. Like new island’s acclaimed production of Mojo Mickybo, Stones in His Pockets is brought to life by two highly talented actors, Eric Lucas and Irish import Matthew Keenan, playing all of the characters in the play. At turns hilarious and touching, much of the comedy of the play is derived from the efforts of the production crew to create the proper "Irish feel," a romanticized notion that often conflicts with the reality of daily life. Winner of the prestigious Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Comedy after running for four record breaking years in London’s West End, it also ran on Broadway where it received a Tony nomination for Best Comedy. New Island, an offshoot of The Keegan Theatre, was created to produce Irish works in minimal settings allowing vivid characterizations to emerge. Through New Island, the company seeks to capture the essence of Irish theatre – raw, bold, and engaging – enabling audiences to experience the immediacy of story. About Keegan Theatre: Founded in 1996, The Keegan Theatre is a professional nonprofit theatre company dedicated to supporting theatre artists and technicians in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. |
