Signature Theatre turns the MAX Theatre into a divine disco ball for its latest production. Based on the camp classic 1980 film, Xanadu was a surprise Broadway hit when it was adapted into a musical. This hilarious, award-winning comedy tells the story of a Greek Muse sent to Earth to inspire a struggling artist. The unexpected side effects of her adventure include discovering true love and building the world's first roller disco. The show features hit songs by Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John, including "Magic," "Suddenly," "I Am Alive" and "Xanadu." Learn More

Both of us thought it was great. Review in the Post was completely out of wack. That guy didn't like Show Boat either. Maybe he should stick to Clint Eastwood movies.Written on Feb 24 2010

Unrelentingly grim. Great acting, but the director failed to draw out the human side.Written on Apr 08 2010

I definitely enjoyed this production. It was staged more in line with the original Hal Prince staging and design (1979), rather than the John Doyle revival (2005) which starred Patti LuPone on Broadway. Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett were well cast. The chorus did a wonderful job of supporting the story with their "Greek chorus" singing. Pirelli, Turpin, and Beadle Bamford did well, though at times their singing lacked good breath support. Lots of blood and bodies. Bravo!Written on Mar 19 2010

Great set, 2 or 3 really excellent voices others quite good as well. Some of the Sondheim dissonance came off a bit flat but overall a good show worth seeing.Written on Mar 11 2010

Description
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is back! The first musical ever presented at Signature gets a brand new environmental staging in the MAX Theatre as part of our 20th anniversary season.
No one's work better represents Signature than composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim's. And Sweeney Todd is Sondheim's masterpiece – with all its gothic gore, lush songs, and romantic melodrama. It's a grand musical that has all the stuff of a classic horror story – betrayal, revenge, madness, and murder.
The "meat" pies will be baking and the blood will be flowing in this thriller musical comedy featuring a celebrated cast of Signature Theatre favorites, and starring DC theatre institution and four-time Helen Hayes Award winner Ed Gero in the title role.
