August Wilson scored a Pulitzer Prize for Fences (which also won a Tony) and The Piano Lesson and is now the star of his own show ... sort of. Created and originally performed by Wilson at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2003, this production of How I Learned What I Learned stars Eugene Lee (Miss Evers' Boys, Fences) as the prolific playwright. With direction by Wilson's longtime friend and collaborator Todd Kreidler, Lee steps into Wilson's shoes to share his personal stories about his encounters with racism, music, love, a stint in jail, his first kiss, life-changing friendships as a young poet in Pittsburgh's Hill District and what it means to be a black artist in America. This exhibit could have been expanded. I'm glad that I didn't pay full price for the experience because I would have felt cheated. The whole exhibit consists of maybe four or five rooms. The whole space could be seen in about 20 minutes. We went to a similar exhibit downtown a few months ago and it seemed much larger maybe because it had a play area, arts and craft activities and dinosaur rides. The animatronics were great and there were a number of opportunities to touch pieces of the exhibit. I went with a four year old girl and ten year old boy and they both enjoyed it and that's what matters the most.
