August Wilson's Tony-nominated Gem of the Ocean is the first installment of his 10-play decade-by-decade series charting the experience of African Americans in the 20th century. The play is set in 1904 in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, where the 285-year-old Aunt Ester welcomes into her parlor Solly Two Kings, a former slave and scout for the Union Army, and Citizen Barlow, a man in search of healing and a new life. A cleanser of souls, Aunt Ester sends Citizen Barlow on a remarkable voyage aboard the legendary slave ship Gem of the Ocean to the City of Bones, where he must face his ancestors' suffering and his own sins before he can find the redemption he seeks.

It started out slow then peaked our interest. Intermission should have been earlier because it was longer than I expected. The actors were great!! The event was entertaining and thought provoking!!

I really enjoy the play. I thought the actors did a very good job. It was a drama with wonderful bits of humor.

In a word... lousy. The script was just boring. We couldn't really understand what was going on and when I looked over my shoulder, half the audience was asleep. I actually drifted off at one point. And not only was the play bad but the only snacks they served were little bags of chips and water. No popcorn, or twizzlers, or soda, nothing. My friends and I left during intermission because we couldn't sit through another 1 1/2 hours. I advise you to instead stay home and watch reruns of Dawsons Creek.

Two of the actors had talent; the others lacked talent. Received no program as they ran out and the theater wasn't even filled. Left at intermission. The first act took an hour and 20 mins.; the scenes moved too slowly. The Company needs to reassess what they are offering the public.
