August Wilson's Tony-nominated Gem of the Ocean is the first installment of his 10-play decade-by-decade series charting the experience of African Americans in the 20th century. The play is set in 1904 in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, where the 285-year-old Aunt Ester welcomes into her parlor Solly Two Kings, a former slave and scout for the Union Army, and Citizen Barlow, a man in search of healing and a new life. A cleanser of souls, Aunt Ester sends Citizen Barlow on a remarkable voyage aboard the legendary slave ship Gem of the Ocean to the City of Bones, where he must face his ancestors' suffering and his own sins before he can find the redemption he seeks. My girlfriend and enjoyed Pill Hill. I actually sported my afro hairstyle to the play. The venue was great and easy to locate. I hope people will continue to support the theater group and Southwest Arts Center.Written on Apr 25 2012

I really enjoyed the play. I left there thinking about choices we make in life and opportunities that can pass you by. I saw myself and others that I know in the characters. It was very well written and touching. A must see... especially for the younger generations.Written on Feb 29 2012
