See the play that won five 2011 Tony Awards and spawned an Academy Award-nominated film by Steven Spielberg. Called "theatrical magic" by The New York Times, War Horse puts actors on stage alongside spectacular, lifelike horse puppets to tell the epic story of Joey, a horse that's sold into the cavalry in World War I, and young Albert, who goes on a treacherous journey to rescue the beloved animal from enemy lines. This original National Theatre of Great Britain production, which packed houses in London and New York, comes to the fabulous Fox Theatre on its nationwide tour. It features stirring music, a remarkable tale and astonishing puppetry by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, which brings to life breathing, galloping, charging horses strong enough for men to ride.

Amazing performance! The puppetry is fantastic - and horses come to life on stage. Although to me this is more of a play with some music and not a traditional musical - it was well worth going. Beautiful folk music and multi-media effects.

"War Horse", like its childrens' book source, portrays simplistic visions of conflict wrapped up all too neatly at the end. The Atlanta cast kept losing their accents, and the horse-less scenes dragged. However, the horse "puppets" were astonishing, gorgeous creations, and the set design, with a "ripped paper sketchbook" motif on which projections constantly changed the scene, added to the high level of artistry on the part of all those who create the magic behind the scenes of a big play production.

This was a great performance. The second act drug on a bit, but the Horses and the guys making them move were the show. Unfortunately, The Fox has decided that you don't really have to show up on time for a performance any longer, seating at least 50+ people well (20-30 minutes) after the show started. Two people on our row showed up 20 minutes late and were rude enough to come in seperately, one after going to concession stand. Totally ruined several scenes. Would love to speak to the Fox GM and see why their policy is one thing and they do another.

I had seen the movie version, so knew the story.I went mainly to see the horses and was not disappointed by either the puppets or their handlers who brought them to life. Staging and the background strip were excellent. Acting, especially by "Albert", could have been better. I don't remember the French woman and girl being in the movie, and wondered why the girl's part was played by an African-American. She performed well, but the casting left a question of her relationship with the French woman. Overall, it was a good performance.

Description

Although War Horse is based on a children’s novel and features a teen protagonist, it includes scenes of mass death on the battlefield, suffering "horses" and shell-shocked soldiers. The content is no more upsetting than a PG action movie, but a live performance can be a more intense experience for young audiences. The play is best for children age 12 and up.
