Straight from collaborating on Disney's The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice went on to their next success, Aida. Adapted from Verdi's immortal opera of the same name, Aida tells a tale of forbidden love in a time of war, transporting audiences back to the Land of the Pharaohs where an Egyptian captain falls for an enslaved Nubian princess, forcing the young lovers to choose between love and death. This ancient tragedy is infused with an eclectic, contemporary score -- as in The Lion King, John writes songs in a variety of styles, from rock ballads to reggae, all paired with Rice's incisive lyrics. The winner of four Tony Awards during its original Broadway run, the power and passion of Aida now comes to Denver. While you're there, don't miss Exhibition Aida, an interactive exhibit featuring Egyptian artifacts borrowed from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science that shares the story and time of Aida. The play was well done. I just had a hard time understanding the "old English" spoken in the play, however, the characters did an amazing job of memorizing it. It wasn't as "scary" as I expected it to be. I thought the scene with the headless horseman could have been a little more scary. Otherwise, it was a good play. Costumes and sets were excellent.
