The most thankless job in theater takes center stage in Theresa Rebeck's wickedly funny play. This comic romp details the attempt of a Hollywood action star to become a serious actor by starring in a Kafka play on Broadway. There are some obvious obstacles to this plan, but the biggest has be his very angry understudy. Taking place over the course of a frantic dress rehearsal, The Understudy puts backstage drama in the spotlight, pitting the bitter understudy against the intellectually challenged action star. Toss a lovesick stage manager and a stagehand who's high as a kite into the mix and the stage is set for comic chaos. Will they pull it together before showtime? Learn More

Entertaining, moving and engaging. Everything came together in the second act. The story was a highlight of what the breakdown of a family can do to men. The stage is a literally a tenement and the setting fittingly showed what a lack of a strong family foundation, lack of education (regardless of drive and skill) can do towards aspirations and limitations. The characters were steeped with history and even the naming of the two characters demonstrated a sort of self fulfilling devolution.
This show contains violence and strong language.
