Prostitution, piety and politics mix in Measure For Measure, one of Shakespeare's darkest -- and most delectable -- comedies. Given free reign over the city, the Duke's stand-in Angelo terrorizes Vienna with his overly strict moral codes, including a ban on fornication. When his secret lust and increasing arrogance endanger a young woman and her brother, the old Duke must step back in to set things right. Bring your own chairs, blankets, food and drinks to this outdoor performance as the Baltimore Shakespeare Factory stages this ever relevant comedy at The Meadow at Evergreen Museum & Library. Entertaining, moving and engaging. Everything came together in the second act. The story was a highlight of what the breakdown of a family can do to men. The stage is a literally a tenement and the setting fittingly showed what a lack of a strong family foundation, lack of education (regardless of drive and skill) can do towards aspirations and limitations. The characters were steeped with history and even the naming of the two characters demonstrated a sort of self fulfilling devolution.
This show contains violence and strong language.
