Actors Ensemble of Berkeley presents Tom Stoppard's acclaimed comic drama Arcadia. This modern classic is set in an English country house in both the early 19th century and the present day, skipping between two modern scholars' discoveries and the fates of the house's residents and guests. Mixing sex, mathematics, romance and landscape architecture, Arcadia examines the universe's influence in our lives, exploring science and art, history, chaos, and the certainty of knowledge. Stoppard is the author of the award-winning plays Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Real Thing and The Coast of Utopia. The production is directed by Robert Estes and features Paul Stout, Alona Bach, Christopher Kelly, Rachel Ferensowicz, Aaron Lindstrom, Shifra Pride Raffel and Jody Christian.

My friend and I both enjoyed this play. It was very well written and acted. The male lead was excellent. This play is comedic with witty dialogue. It also weaves the two time periods together well. The timing of the dialogue of all the characters from both time periods needs a bit of work but that should improve over the course of the run. The first act seemed very long. Wish they could some how break it up a bit. Overall, very enjoyable play. Kudos to the playwright.

Some scenes and some of the actors were really good. But I think that this was too "big" of a play, requiring 13 actors and over 3 hours in length. Hence some parts just didn't work well. I do recommend that anyone going should read a good synopsis of the play first.

Arcadia is one of my very favorite plays. I have seen it at least three times before, in Lodnon and when it was performed a few years ago at ACT. This is a great production - everyone who loves language and loves to think about science and history should see it at least once. To see it in a small, intimate setting is really marvelous. It was a magical evening.
