Berkeley Playhouse's production of Seussical, the Tony-nominated family musical based on the classic books by Dr. Seuss, brings the author's beloved characters, including the mischievous Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, and the Whos of Whoville to life. The story, which melds over 20 of Dr. Seuss's timeless tales in one plot, is accompanied by an original score and lyrics inspired by Dr. Seuss's unique writing style, including "Oh, The Thinks You Can Think" and "Alone in the Universe." The wonderful complexity and fast pace of the plot combined with the colorful styling, catchy tunes and thrilling aerial circus acrobatics of Kimberly Miller, makes this musical a delight for children of all ages. The Berkeley Daily Planet highly recommends the production for everyone, regardless of age, and The Stark Insider lauds star William Hodgson as a "superb Cat-in-the-Hat."

Kids of all ages should enjoy this show. The performers are all quite talented and the costuming is quite exceptional in evoking the magical world of Dr. Seuss.

This event was outstanding. The talent throughout the cast was amazing. It was one of the best performances I have seen in a small venue.

A great show for everyone- adults were laughing and cheering along with little ones. Suessical is not known to have the greatest story so my expectations were modest, but we just loved the show. Director Kimberly Dooley made every bit shine with a very physical and energetic production. The leads were spot on, with some really wonderful singers, and they made you really care for the ridiculous but somehow sympathetic stories. The children and teen cast as "Who's" were adorable and very professional- they added tremendously to the production and the family ambience.

Truly fantastic performance. Great singing, a truly wonderful story (how can you go wrong with Dr. Seuss?) -- even an amazing acrobat made this a performance that was equally fun for adults. So grateful for performances that are so well executed and the cast is *truly* talented. Not to be missed!

Description

When the tiny clover-dwelling Whos are threatened with danger (and the general disbelief in the existence of Whoville), Horton must face ridicule, kidnapping and a court trial in the Jungle of Nool to save his little Who friends. Fortunately, Gertrude Mc Fuzz never loses faith in him or in the power of friendship, loyalty, family and community.

Following the success of Berkeley Playhouse’s inaugural version in 2007, That Cat in the Hat comes back to Berkeley Playhouse as hip and effervescent as ever! Weaving together some of Dr. Seuss’s most beloved stories and characters in one fantastical journey, Seussical, the Musical is a thrill ride through your own imagination and the imagination of one of the 20th century’s most fun storytellers.

Music by Stephen Flaherty / Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens / Book by Ahrens and Flaherty. Co-conceived with Eric Idle. Based on the Works of Dr. Seuss / Directed by Kimberly Dooley with Music Direction by Tal Ariel.
