The high-stakes world of middle-school spelling competitions takes center stage in Berkeley Playhouse's production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee -- along with some added audience participation and improvised moments. This musical comedy follows six overachieving would-be wordsmiths and their neurotic parents. The hilariously catchy songs capture tweenage troubles at their worst, from "Woe Is Me" to "I'm Not That Smart." And the contest teaches the valuable lesson that winning isn't the only definition of success. With music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was nominated for Best Musical and five other Tony Awards in its original run, winning for Best Book of a Musical. How wonderful to see 5 magicians do their thing. A fine night. But the quality varied.
I found Jason Andrews to be a master of classic sleight, Dana Daniels to be unusually funny and parodying of classic magic and Mark Kornhauser to be very clever and amazing in his ability to memorize (He not only told 8 of 8 people what town their zipcode was in but then proceeded to tell all 8's zipcodes and towns in sequence.) Jade did a fabulously beautiful opening routine before, unfortunately, descending into amateurishness: terrible patter, bad quick-change act, and would you believe---the tired old linking rings trick. And she only used 3 rings. Utterly unredeeming was Christopher Hart whose closer was a silly routine with a pink hand connected to "invisible" fishing wire. Bad, bad.
That said, it was a great overall experience and I hope that "Champions of Magic" returns to the Bay Area--with Hart replaced, Jade with an improved act. Or even better, 5 different top magicians every few months.
