On Christmas Eve 1944, Nutcracker made its American debut in San Francisco and instantly became a holiday tradition that spread across the country. San Francisco Ballet Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson honors that 70-year history by using the City by the Bay as the backdrop for his Nutcracker. Set in San Francisco during the 1915 World's Fair, Clara's dreamlike journey takes place amidst colorful, larger-than-life scenery, more than 200 dazzling costumed characters and, of course, Tchaikovsky's beautiful score performed live by the world-class San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. Make sure you snag great seats for this holiday tradition with this priority pre-sale offer before tickets go on sale to the general public. Learn More
Drawn from the ancient texts of the Mahabharata, the work explores the last of the four ages in Hindu philosophy and fuse traditional Balinese performance genres such as kecak (interlocking vocal chants) and topeng (masked dances) with modern techniques of video and lighting, set design, and computer-generated ambient sounds. Directed by Ellen Sebastian Chang, with choreography by I Wayan Dibia, poetry by Goenawan Mohamad, music by Wayne Vitale and Made Arnawa, and ten dancers including I Ketut Rina and Tjokorda Istri Putra Padmini.
