Her parents named her "Star" ... and with a grandfather, uncles and a father all famous musicians, how could she be anything but? The star in question is Estrella Morente, who has since exceeded every prediction of success to become one of the greatest flamenco vocalists alive today. Celebrated for her fresh approach to flamenco and popular Spanish songs, Morente has a supple and evocative voice, summoning heart-broken regret and boundless joy with equal ease (and often within the same song). So stirring is her voice, that director Pedro Almodóvar included it on the soundtrack to his Oscar-nominated film, Volver. Experience her intense rhythms and moody melodies -- and the accompaniment of a dazzling flamenco guitarist -- when Morente performs live at Cal Performances' Zellerbach Hall. Learn More

I had tears in my eyes most of the performance - it was stunningly beautiful!
Formally organized in 1994, the Guangzhou Ballet has already produced over a dozen accomplished programs embracing both Western classics and original ballets based on Chinese themes. The company has participated in memorable collaborations with the Chinese National Opera; performed before cheering audiences in Cuba, Spain, France, Germany, Australia, and Canada; and won awards from the Paris, Moscow, and Helsinki international dance competitions.
For its Berkeley visit, the ensemble will present its full-length production of Mei Lanfang, an inspired work based on the life of the legendary Peking Opera performer who shaped the art of Chinese theater for generations. Mei Lanfang has been praised internationally for its elaborate sets and costumes, as well as its captivating score by Liu Tingyu and the innovative choreography of Fu Xingbang and Zhang Dandan (the group's artistic director).
