After getting his start in Motown as part of the Commodores, singer-songwriter Lionel Richie became one of the most successful male solo artists of the 1980s, with hits like "Truly," the Caribbean-flavored "All Night Long," "Endless Love" with Diana Ross, "Hello" and "Say You, Say Me," which also won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Richie's concerts tend to become giant sing-alongs, so brush up on your lyrics and get ready for a night of magic. Sharing the stage with the five-time Grammy winner will be CeeLo Green. Known for his solo career as well as being a part of the soul duo Gnarls Barkley, Green has recorded numerous hits and is most widely recognized for the chart-topping single "Crazy" and his time as a judge on The Voice. Bostridge and Drake were both remarkable and it was a very moving performance. Doing it in Zellerbach was a mistake, however, for such an intimate piece. I sat half way back in the orchestra and had to strain to hear some of the singing, partly because the air conditioning is very noisy and didn't stop until the last two songs, and because Zellerbach is simply too barnlike for such a piece, or for such a performer.
Quotes & Highlights
- "Mr. Bostridge's expressive, nuanced and clear voice is also ideal for conveying the despair and amorous longing of Schubert's songs." --New York Times.
Ian Bostridge will perform Schubert's great masterpiece based on the poems of Wilhelm Müller.
Program: Schubert/Winterreise, op. 89, D. 911
