Her parents named her "Star" ... and with a grandfather, uncles and a father all famous musicians, how could she be anything but? The star in question is Estrella Morente, who has since exceeded every prediction of success to become one of the greatest flamenco vocalists alive today. Celebrated for her fresh approach to flamenco and popular Spanish songs, Morente has a supple and evocative voice, summoning heart-broken regret and boundless joy with equal ease (and often within the same song). So stirring is her voice, that director Pedro Almodóvar included it on the soundtrack to his Oscar-nominated film, Volver. Experience her intense rhythms and moody melodies -- and the accompaniment of a dazzling flamenco guitarist -- when Morente performs live at Cal Performances' Zellerbach Hall. Learn More

Copland/Symphony No. 3
Reflecting the character and identity of Israel's diverse population, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra—one of the country's oldest and most important musical institutions—visits Berkeley with a special program honoring the 60th Anniversaries of both the Orchestra and the founding of the State of Israel. Under the dynamic creative vision of music director Leon Botstein, the program spotlights music by three contemporary Jewish composers, including Aaron Copland's stirring Third Symphony with its thunderous conclusion based on his Fanfare for the Common Man, as well as Ernst Toch's tour de force Big Ben Variations. Appearing with the orchestra is Grammy nominated violinist Robert McDuffie.
