Inspired by the vivid world of the Victorian music-hall, this production of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist uses the novel's original language to dramatize one of the most deeply felt stories ever written about childhood. A cast of unforgettable characters brings the underworld of 19th-century London to thrilling life. By turns comic and tragic, musical and dramatic, Twist was a runaway success in London.

The story is told rather like a Greek Tragedy. Carson Elrod and the kid playing Oliver were really great.

This is an extraordinarily rich production.. with Artful D, Fagin, Bill Sykes and Miss Nancy giving a rousing performance.. and with laughs galore with Mr. and Mrs. Bumble... This is as the story should be .. and not Disneyfied up as in musical "Oliver"! I loved it!

Oliver Twist in Berkeley Rep is a cross between a play and a musical. It is more on the performance side than witty lines. Limited cast transforms into different roles with unbelievable speed and ease which leaves a sense of humor lingering in the air. The stage is creatively set up and could be changed to a grim workhouse, a crowded court house, a filthy slum, an elegant mid-class living room, and the ghostly London Bridge. The acting is definitely the highlight of the performance. Carson Elrod seamlessly switches between the third-person narrator and Dodger, the teenage thief. His versatile body language makes two completely different roles convincing. Mr. Bumble bounces his chubby body on the stage wins laughter and applause from the audience. Nancy’s toughness as a teenage prostitute and softness as a sister/mother is portrayed with balance and tension. Although, I thought Fagin should be little scrubbier. In short, it is a very creative and energetic production.
