Award-winning Bay Area playwright Lauren Gunderson's latest heartfelt and witty romantic comedy revolves around the smoldering chemistry between a headstrong young woman and a guy she meets while working at her father's fireworks shop. But their budding relationship is threatened when a bomb goes off in town, lighting the fuse on a powder keg of tension between the two. Lauren Gunderson won the 2014 Steinberg/ATCA New Play award and was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for her hit show I and You. Fire Work is presented by TheatreFIRST, producers of this spring's popular Escanaba in da Moonlight. Learn More

Go see the last show tonight, if you read this in time! "Over the Tavern" portrays family life in an often humorous but always honest way. The roles of Sister Clarissa, the mom, and Rudy are especially well-acted. This production is Actors Ensemble at its best, and it continues a thematic thread that included Sarah Ruhl's "Passion Play" and John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt".
Also, I love the young cast members. They are earnest, authentic and humble, even despite the fact that it's Berkeley. (Some other productions involving young actors in Berkeley and Alameda are revolting opportunities for kids -- and their parents -- to show off.)
This show is recommended for those age 11 or older.
This show’s running time is two hours and 15 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.
