Jeff Daniels, the actor both funny enough to star in Dumb and Dumber and smart enough to lead HBO's The Newsroom, is also a hilarious and insightful playwright. Daniels' outrageous comedy, Escanaba in da Moonlight, was an instant hit from the moment it first premiered at the acclaimed Purple Rose Theatre. Follow the story of the Soady clan, a family of "Yoopers" -- residents of Michigan's vast, underpopulated Upper Peninsula -- and their escapades at a ramshackle deer camp on the opening day of hunting season. Having never bagged a buck, 43-year-old Reuben Soady is determined to kill his first deer with a little help from his Native American wife. Michael Storm directs this hilarious second installment in TheatreFIRST's 20th anniversary season. Learn More

Overall, it was an enjoyable evening with some very clever lines and conversations among the notable characters. For whatever reason, we found it to be good and amusing, but listened to a good portion of the audience really getting belly-laughs out of it....don't know if we were just too tired or not in the groove or what, but it just did not tickle our funny bones to that extent. Acting was fine, good use of the limited space for the bar setting, good costumes, no major negatives, but no major highs for the two of us either. That said, glad we went....live theater always beats tv or similar alternative activities.
