Legendary choreographer and director Bill T. Jones, a Kennedy Center Honoree and two-time Tony Award winner for Spring Awakening and Fela!, brings the West Coast premiere of his acclaimed company's newest work to Cal Performances -- accompanied live by its composer Ted Coffey. Story/Time is an innovative melding of music, story and dance that explores the idea of memory and time through 70 short one-minute pieces -- all arranged by chance. Lively, Heartwarming Musical Oliver! at Drury Lane Theatre

Full Price:
$35.00 - $49.00
Our Price:
$17.50 - $24.50

Based on Dickens' beloved character from the novel Oliver Twist, this boisterous musical follows young orphan Oliver from the dreary surroundings of a workhouse to the streets of Victorian London, where he unwittingly falls in with a gang of pickpockets. Featuring memorable songs like "Food, Glorious Food," "Consider Yourself," "Where Is Love?" and "As Long as He Needs Me," the endearing tale tackles relatable themes: the search for love, the triumph of right over wrong, the hope for a better world, and the belief that life is worth living. Oliver! premiered in London's West End in 1960, debuted on Broadway in 1963, and was made into a musical film in 1968. Learn More

Zellerbach is a great auditorium with excellent sight lines, so no matter where you sit you get a full view. And it was worth it for this show! I want to go see it again and again to experience the changes that happen from show to show. The program is a combination of 70 one-minute stories and pieces of choreography, chosen from over 130 possibilities, and strung together differently each time with unique musical accompaniment. It was boggling to consider how complicated that must be for all of the performers, and yet the combination we saw was beautiful and moving.

Bill T Jones is an acquired taste. I like how he challenges the audience with his art. This performance was no different. It was typical Bill T Jones - wonderfully abstract. His stories are (auto-) biographical and were fascinating to listen to in and of themselves. The movement (a mixture of dance and contact improvisation) and singing around him challenged the audience's preconceived notion of what should accompany the stories. I did not grasp all the references (musical, verbal and otherwise) but his 20 min chat after the performance with the audience elucidated much of his inspiration and the process of developing this work. The only part I disliked were the roughly 4 mins towards the end which used very a loud grating sound as backdrop. I found it to be aural torture. Aside from that, I'm glad I was able to catch this performance for a great price!

Authentic art and consciousness raising affair. Truly an international troupe without having to trek to New York.
