Smuin Ballet breaks the boundaries of traditional dance with this evening of vibrant, innovative works from some of the Bay Area's most exciting choreographers. Choreographer Garrett Ammon unleashes his own take on Tchaikovsky's iconic score in Serenade for Strings, using movement to reflect the composition's intensity and precision. In Objects of Curiosity, Smuin's choregrapher-in-residence Amy Seiwert explores the tensions between desire and restraint, pairing them with a delicate score by Philip Glass and Foday Musa Suso that mirrors her study on stage. The evening concludes with Frankie and Johnny, Michael Smuin's passionate tribute to the legendary Gene Kelly, danced to a soundtrack of some of the biggest names in Latin and mambo music. Learn More
Reviews & Ratings
In 2006, the great prima ballerina Natalia Makarova thrilled Bay Area audiences with her dazzling new take on Tchaikovsky’s tale of immortal love, choreographing and directing a fully staged production of Swan Lake showcasing Russia’s renowned Tchaikovsky Perm Ballet. Accompanied by full orchestra, and featuring lavish sets and costumes, Makarova’s lovely production returns by popular demand, this year featuring two superstar soloists (Mar 28 and Mar 30) from Europe. Trained in Moscow, Polina Semionova is a principal at the Berlin State Ballet and recently conquered UK audiences as Odette/Odile in memorable performances with the English National Ballet (“dazzlingly seductive—a performance of total confidence and virtuosity,” said the Sunday Times, London). Denis Matvienko, principal guest dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet recently stirred New York crowds to delirium, “like a throwback to the days of wildly exhibitionistic star dancing by the likes of Rudolf Nureyev and Alexander Godunov” (The New York Times). Made possible, in part, by the Bernard Osher Foundation
