The high-stakes world of middle-school spelling competitions takes center stage in Berkeley Playhouse's production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee -- along with some added audience participation and improvised moments. This musical comedy follows six overachieving would-be wordsmiths and their neurotic parents. The hilariously catchy songs capture tweenage troubles at their worst, from "Woe Is Me" to "I'm Not That Smart." And the contest teaches the valuable lesson that winning isn't the only definition of success. With music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was nominated for Best Musical and five other Tony Awards in its original run, winning for Best Book of a Musical. My fourteen-year old daughter and I enjoyed Berkeley ballet's production of The Nutcracker---overall the dancers did a pretty good job although a few of the female dancers were a little stiff. Brian Fisher as Fritz was absolutely delightful. Julia Morgan's theater is a great little venue with a charming ambience which lent to the magical story of the Nutcracker.
Engaging, funny, beautiful, heartwarming — this fresh retelling of the holiday classic is a wonderful gift for audiences of all ages. The students of BBT’s Children’s Division share the stage in this joyous production with BBT’s Youth Company and professional guest artists.
Sally Streets and Robert Nichols choreographed this version of The Nutcracker.
