The Punany Poets aim to put on more than a show -- they represent a movement. The group was started by author and activist Jessica Holter after the death of rapper Eazy-E from complications due to AIDS. This sensual theatrical experience arises from a commitment to public health and public service, in particular as it relates to HIV and AIDS among disenfranchised Americans of color. The theater that has developed from this commitment is known as "theater of the oppressed," a genre that strives to provide edutainment through hard-core theatrical presentations surrounding issues of sexuality as it pertains to economics, religion, politics, community mores, self-esteem and health.

The Punany Poets are an erotic poetry group. It's very sexy, some nudity. I saw their performance on HBO and wanted to see them live for some time. I was disappointed in this show, mainly because of the venue. The set was very distracting from the performance. I could see props from other plays from my seat. You could hear noise from the lobby because the exit door was open. The sound person wasn't on cue. There were at least 6 poets, but one microphone. And the microphone had a hot pink cord. All of this took away from the actual poets who were very, very good. And guests weren't told at the ticket booth to buy drink and food tickets before going into the theatre so you can get refreshments. But I'm not surprised because the Black Berkeley Rep. has terrible customer service. The host forgot to acknowledge a poet, who was one of the best, at the end of the show. I hope she remembers next time. I know the Punany Poets are really good so I'll give them another chance at different venue.
