In this modern masterwork -- critically praised as a unique mix of Oscar Wilde and Bertolt Brecht -- the great Irish writer George Bernard Shaw pits a military industrialist against his crusading daughter. She's a Salvation Army major; he's an arms manufacturer and whiskey distiller -- on certain issues, they could not disagree more. But when he begins donating money to her organization, matters come to a head as the characters grapple with questions of business, faith, family and philanthropy. After 16 years, A.C.T. brings Shaw back to the stage with this co-production with Theatre Calgary, one of A.C.T.'s favorite Canadian collaborators, featuring an international cast of Canadian and American actors. Wow. This show was spectacularly awful. Performed without an orchestra or band or even a single person on a piano - any of which would have been better than their solution: actors singing along with the soundtrack of the film! This is not the stage version that was performed on Broadway (no dancer playing the Tornado, no dog as Toto - he's left invisible, no actors playing The Yellow Brick Road) - instead, it looks like they transcribed the dialogue from the film. It was a long slog to the end of Act One, when the Lion appeared - he was the only person I wasn't embarrassed for - he was funny, danced well, and (I think) he could sing - none of the performers' singing could be heard over the strains of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, etc. from the movie. The dances were painful - all the actors looking around to see what the others were doing, the sets looked like an elementary school production... It was shocking to see something this dreadful. On the plus side, it's so horrible in so many ways, that it became entertaining - in a total train wreck sort of way (the Tin Man's hat fell off constantly and the Lion lost his tail as soon as he stood up to dance).

Very amateur performance with singers doing voice overs of original Wiz score. Food was marginal and deserts were next to awful and overpriced at $4.50 per slice. The hideous champagne was Andre brand and so sweet it was like sugar water.
The Crown Jewel Package includes backstage passes with Green Room access and a behind-the-scenes tour before the show, a meet-and-greet with the director and producers and the opportunity to take photos with the cast. You will also get bottomless champagne, Red Carpet treatment and front row seating.
