Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, noted playwright Terrence McNally, and based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, Ragtime the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families as they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. Called by Time Magazine "A triumph for the stage," and by the International Herald Tribune "the best musical in twenty years," this acclaimed musical won the 1998 Tony Awards for Best Score, Book and Orchestrations, and captured both the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score. Youth Musical Theater Company brings together a cast of talented youths from seventh grade through college level to present this show featuring a melting pot of musical styles to tell of life in turn-of-the-century America -- a story that remains equally relevant today. It was an imaginative and thoroughly entertaining show. I enjoyed Berkeley Playhouse's interpretation of the musical. I think the new humor that was added into the show made it more relevant to those who haven't watched the classic movie and refreshing for others who have.Written on Dec 07 2009
Although all of the cast were wonderful and talented, it was an amazing experience watching Anna Ishida (Glinda/Wicked Witch/Aunt Em/Ms Gulch) perform on stage as she switched from scary to caring almost instantly on the stage.
I didn't give it 5 stars because I thought that it dragged on a little bit for too long. The show is about 2.5 hours (including intermission).
Recommended for children and adults of all ages. Follow the yellow brick road to this imaginative production. =)

I've just treated myself to a single ticket for the Wizard of Oz at Julia Morgan theater in Berkeley and think it is something a wide audience would enjoy. Although we know the great story, the production is fresh, creative, and delightfully unpredictable!Written on Nov 29 2009
Luckily I was up close and could watch some of the expert musical support directed by Phil Gorman. First, it is fun to have a real music pit hiding the musicians under the stage playing a double keyboard, drums, two violins, trumpet, and young woman who plays flute, sax, and clarinet. Was fun to eavesdrop before the show on how he encouraged each on their particular part at strategic moments in the production. I loved being in the 2nd row where I could really be close to it all.
The delightful cast is thoroughly professional, including captivating Toto, the real, and most adorable dog, who remarkably is comfortable in Dorothy's or someone's arms throughout the entire performance.
The magical set design featured trap doors, slanted floor, shadow screens, a few white tubes to represent the house and fence, glittery poles to identify the emerald city, and color changing orbs to make the familiar story brand new. Costumes were equally as creative. Sound, lighting, props, everything worked perfectly.
Although this was a long show with intermission, 7:30-10:00pm, there were oodles of bright eyed children, small, medium, and large, who were wide awake, not frightened, and thoroughly enjoying the show. (At first I thought they would be squirmy and noisy but they were totally into it!) Some of the dialog was quite creative and funny for the adult side of the Berkeley audience.
AND: They have good snacks - even decent wine which they let you take into the theater as long as it was in a covered cup with a straw!!!! How cool is that!!

Never having seen the movie (incredible but true!), I'm not sure how closely the play followed that version but it was totally enjoyable and fast paced enough for both adults and children. If I hadn't read there were going to be bungee-jumping monkeys and smoke, neither of which appeared, I wouldn't have know they had any technical difficulties. In addition to the great acting and singing by the human players (loved the Cowardly Lion!), the dog that played Toto was amazing. Completely calm and well behaved through all the dancing, being handed from person to person and stuffed in the requisite basket, she seemed to not mind anything. Kudos to whoever is her "parent".Written on Nov 16 2009
