Written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, noted playwright Terrence McNally, and based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, Ragtime the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families as they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. Called by Time Magazine "a triumph for the stage," and by the International Herald Tribune "the best musical in twenty years," this acclaimed musical won the 1998 Tony Awards for Best Score, Book and Orchestrations, and captured both the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score. Youth Musical Theater Company brings together a cast of talented youths from seventh grade through college level to present this show featuring a melting pot of musical styles to tell of life in turn-of-the-century America -- a story that remains equally relevant today. Great fun. My 3 1/2 year old granddaughter was rapt. It was great to be able to greet the actors afterwards.Written on Oct 05 2009

I took my three God-daughters, aged 8, 11 & 13 to the Saturday 11am show. The 8-yr-old was very engaged and enjoyed it, especially because she is involved in children's theatre and performed in a play at the Julia Morgan Theatre, where the play was. The older girls said it was "cute" and "ok", typical of tweens and teens who are too cool for cute. I thought it was cute, well done, clever and the perfect length. Kids love when performers come into the audience, the stage set was really cool for kids because it has a building block theme and inspires imagination and creativity... very colorful and visually interesting.Written on Sep 28 2009
This is quality children's theatre and is an example of culture that is screaming out in pain from lack of funding. We need to support this work! KIDS LOVE IT AND ARE INSPIRED!!! How great is that?

Description
Based on the Book by Tomie dePaola
Original Lyrics by Roberta Carlson and Thomas W. Olson
Music and Additional Lyrics by Aron Accurso
Adapted for the Stage by Thomas W. Olson
It’s been another busy day for Strega Nona, everybody’s favorite do-good witch. What with all the warts, bunions and assorted other ills she has cured in her tiny Italian village, she is way too tired to tend her goat and do the chores. She needs a helper, and, when Big Anthony stumbles into town, penniless, hungry, and eager to please, she hires him on the spot. Strega Nona warns him not to mess with her magic, especially not with her magical pasta pot. But does Big Anthony pay attention? Come see what happens when Tomie dePaola’s beloved masterpiece of children’s literature bursts into life in the best Commedia dell’arte tradition.
