The high-stakes world of middle-school spelling competitions takes center stage in Berkeley Playhouse's production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee -- along with some added audience participation and improvised moments. This musical comedy follows six overachieving would-be wordsmiths and their neurotic parents. The hilariously catchy songs capture tweenage troubles at their worst, from "Woe Is Me" to "I'm Not That Smart." And the contest teaches the valuable lesson that winning isn't the only definition of success. With music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was nominated for Best Musical and five other Tony Awards in its original run, winning for Best Book of a Musical. You know I enjoyed this production more than I thought I would. I love how the cast was creative in how they created the "sets". You really had to visualize and use your imagination. I also enjoyed the dancing and the guy that tap danced along with the small scale acrobatics and body movements. I thought "Alice" was very captivating - just wish she could project a little better. I some times had to strain to hear what she was saying. Overall, glad I went.

The production was OK. It would have been better for those sitting in the back rows if a few of the cast members especially Alice could have projected her voice a pitch higher. We have difficulty hearing and definitely missed some lines!
Created and Performed by the Advanced Training Program of the Clown Conservatory of the San Francisco Circus Center
Directed by Jeff Raz, Veteran Cirque Du Soleil Performer
Alice’s adventures in Wonderland have never before been told like this — with clowns, acrobats, jugglers, and musicians. When Alice searches for a way back home, she will meet the caterpillar, the white rabbit, and she will have to escape from the dreaded Queen of Hearts. You may think you know this classic story, but hold on to your hats, because this world premiere created by master clown Jeff Raz of Cirque Du Soleil for the Advanced Training Program of the Clown Conservatory and produced by Active Arts will be the wildest, craziest trip to Wonderland you’ve ever taken!
