Imagination Stage presents a world-premiere musical by musician and playwright Psalmayene 24, known locally for his unique style of hip-hop musical theater. P. Nokio re-imagines the classic tale of Pinocchio, the wooden puppet with an honesty deficiency. This updated version takes the story from Italy to the enchanted land of Hip-Hopia. G. Petto, a computer game designer, creates a digital character named P.Nokio who comes to life, becoming G. Petto's unexpected son. P. Nokio, not yet a real boy, attends the Old School to master style, originality, and swagger and gain reality. Unfortunately, temptation rears its head and P.Nokio is led astray by fun and trouble, becoming swept up in a tangle of lies that endangers his newfound father. To save G.Petto, P.Nokio must wise up, keep it real, and learn that words and truth are the mightiest weapons of all.

I enjoyed P. Nokio--Psmalmayene 24 and Paige Hernandez are very talented and the rest of the cast was very good too. The acting was good; great dancing (not enough of it); good energy, set design, script was pretty sharp, clever and moved right along. The music was pretty good; and Psalmayene hit the heights in his final rap--up until then, however, the rapping had been a bit on the forced side. Congratulations on a wonderful production - I look forward to seeing more from this group.Written on Feb 13 2012
With a few tweaks this could have been an A-plus instead of a B-plus performance.
--The initial rap introduction ought to be shelved--it's a bit too condescending, even for kids. C'mon, rapping about "clean underwear"? I think kids can tell when something is being faked and some of those lyrics were forced. Either get rid of it or improve it.
--G. Petto--Great acting here, great scenes with P. Nokio. I loved the first scenes here; even the "father, son" shouting song worked for me. No complaints here; this hit all the emotional spots.
--Fox and Cat --Enjoyed this a lot. THe two actors moved well but I would have loved to have seen some real choreography and dancing; you had a missed opportunity here for some showstopper moves.
--Grafitti Fairy - Paige Hernandez sparkled in this role - great costume, monologues, movements. Every time she appeared I wanted to clap. WHy didn't she make a final appearance and take some credit for the "miracle" at the end? That would have seemed appropriate,I think.
--P.Nokio - This character carried the bulk of the show. Nice energy, good dancing and rapping. Psmalmayene captured the character's dilemmas well. I enjoyed watching him a lot. TYhe final rap was stellar.
Overall, the music was about 60 percent to 75 percent successful--some pieces sort of drifted into silence; others were a little too mechanical. I wish there had been one song that really connected with the audience and moved people. That's what seemed to be missing IMHO.
Otherwise, great production, great colorful set, high energy, I liked it!! THe kids liked it too.

The show (like Zomo the Rabbit) seemed to be geared for kids, howevever there were many lines that kept the parents laughing. I like his work. I didn't realize he was the creator of Zomo until my kids pointed it out to me. Great Job! How can my son apply/volunteer to be in one of your productions?Written on Feb 22 2012
